Cambridge International AS & A Level Literature in English (9695) develops a deep appreciation of literary texts from different periods, cultures and genres. Students engage in close reading, critical analysis and independent interpretation of poetry, prose and drama — developing the ability to explore how writers create meaning and effect through their choices of language, form and structure.

The course encourages students to read widely and to develop an informed personal response to literature. At AS Level, students study three set texts plus an unseen text; at A Level they study four further set texts. Texts are drawn from a rich international range of authors, reflecting diverse cultural contexts and perspectives.

Cambridge International A Level Literature in English is highly valued by universities as preparation for further study in English literature, creative writing, journalism, law, education and the broader humanities. The analytical and communication skills developed are widely transferable.
